Polyelectrolyte adsorption
نویسنده
چکیده
2014 The adsorption of uncharged polymers is, due to numerous efforts over past decades, fairly well understood. Some insight exists into the structure of the adsorbed layer, and the effect of the important parameters molecular weight, solvency and polymer/surface interaction has been investigated. Theory and experiment are beginning to converge. The polyelectrolyte adsorption process, however, is far from understood, because it is so very complex. In addition to the aforementioned parameters, three more variables are involved, namely the electrostatic properties of the adsorbent surface, those of the polyelectrolyte, and the concentration of small ions. It is the aim of this contribution to highlight important questions and to review the available experimental data. Theory is still in its infancy, the more so since some data are indicative of metastable states. Some promising approaches will be discussed. J. Phys. France 49 (1988) 1001-1008 JUIN 1988, I

Stiff chains inhibit and flexible chains promote protein adsorption to polyelectrolyte multilayers.
We tested the hypothesis that the level of protein adsorption onto polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) is influenced by the chain stiffness of the polymers forming the multilayer. The implication being that by altering the chain stiffness, PEMs can be formed that promote or inhibit protein adsorption. Protein adsorption to PEMs consisting of flexible and semi-flexible polyelectrolytes was invest...
متن کاملProtein binding on polyelectrolyte-treated glass. Effect of structure of adsorbed polyelectrolyte.
Polyelectrolyte adsorption can be used to modify the surface of chromatographic packings in order to make them more suitable for protein separations. We studied the binding of proteins to controlled pore glass (CPG) on which the polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) was noncovalently immobilized through electrostatic interaction. We found that the selectivity of PDADMAC fo...
متن کاملPolyelectrolyte Adsorption and Multilayer Formation
In this chapter, we review our recent theoretical work on the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers. The first layer is obtained by polyelectrolyte adsorption on a surface with an opposite charge. The adsorbed polyelectrolyte charge is sufficient to invert the charge of the surface. Each subsequent layer is bound to the previous one by the formation of a polyelectrolyte complex. Using a Deby...
متن کاملAdsorption of a Synthetic Heparinoid Polyelectrolyte on an Ion-Exchanging Surface
The adsorption of a synthetic heparinoid polyelectrolyte on poly (vinylchloride) previously treated with tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMAC) was studied using radiotracer techniques to provide a more quantitative picture of antithrombogenic surface coatings. 125I-labeled polyelectrolyte was used for overall adsorption measurements. Experiments with 36Cl-labeled TDMAC yielded information o...
متن کاملDielectric discontinuity effects on the adsorption of a linear polyelectrolyte at the surface of a neutral nanoparticle.
The formation of complexes between nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes is a key process for the control of the reactivity of manufactured nanoparticles and rational design of core shell nanostructures. In this work, we investigate the influence of the nanoparticle dielectric constant on the adsorption of a linear charged polymer (polyelectrolyte) at the surface of a neutral nanoparticle. The pol...
متن کاملAdsorption of Xylan onto Cellulose Fibers Pretreated with Cationic Polyelectrolyte and Its Effect on Paper Properties
Xylan is known as a strength-enhancing agent for paper. However, it is difficult to adsorb xylan onto cellulose fibers because it carries the same negative charge as fibers. Therefore, either cationization of xylan or addition of cationic polyelectrolyte is required to maximize the effect of xylan use. In this study, cationic polyelectrolyte was used to promote xylan adsorption onto cellulose f...
